Murchison Falls Ferry Fees

The Paraa ferry is one of those Murchison Falls costs that rarely appears on a brochure but shows up clearly on a self-drive receipt. Uganda Wildlife Authority charges the crossing separately from park entry and vehicle gate fees — in Ugandan shillings, by vehicle weight, per one-way trip. If your lodge sits south of the Nile and your game drives run on Buligi north of it, those shillings add up across a multi-day safari.

Why Ferry Fees Exist — and What They Are Not

The Victoria Nile splits Murchison Falls National Park at Paraa, roughly halfway along the 87-kilometre Masindi–Paraa–Pakwach road. The southern bank holds most mid-range and luxury lodges, the launch-cruise jetty, the Top of the Falls trailhead and the approach from Kichumbanyobo and Bugungu gates. The northern bank holds the Buligi Peninsula game tracks, Paraa North headquarters and the densest savannah wildlife — Rothschild’s giraffe, buffalo herds and the lion country most visitors come for.

Ferry fees pay for the UWA-operated vehicle pontoon that links those two sectors. They are not included in the US$45 foreign non-resident park entry ticket, and they are not the same as the vehicle entrance fee you pay at Kichumbanyobo or Tangi gate. Think of ferry charges as a toll for crossing the river inside the park — billed in UGX at the jetty or Paraa tourism office, on top of everything else.

Official UWA Ferry Crossing Fees

UWA publishes ferry tariffs in the conservation tariff by vehicle weight. The structure has remained consistent across recent tariff cycles and applies to scheduled crossings at Paraa. All amounts below are in Ugandan shillings (UGX) and are charged per one-way crossing:

Light vehicles (2 tonnes and below): UGX 20,000. Medium vehicles (2 to 5 tonnes): UGX 40,000. Heavy vehicles (5 to 10 tonnes): UGX 80,000. Very heavy vehicles (10 to 20 tonnes): UGX 150,000. Motorcycles: UGX 5,000. Passengers (excluding the driver): UGX 5,000 each.

Vehicle drivers cross free. School buses carrying students cross free. Vehicles exceeding 20 tonnes require prior approval from UWA park management before using the ferry — do not assume a loaded truck or overlander above that threshold will be accepted without clearance.

Most tour-company 4x4s and self-drive saloons fall into the light-vehicle band at UGX 20,000 per crossing. A loaded overlander or small bus may tip into the medium category — UWA assesses by declared weight class, not by passenger count.

One-Way Pricing and the 7pm Validity Rule

Every scheduled crossing is priced as a single one-way trip. A morning run north and an evening return south each incur a separate vehicle fee. A three-night stay with daily Buligi drives from a southern-bank lodge therefore means six vehicle crossings over three full game-drive days — six times UGX 20,000 for a light 4×4, or UGX 120,000 in ferry charges alone before passenger fees.

UWA’s tariff notes that for visitors resident in the park, the crossing fee paid on the first scheduled trip is valid until 19:00 on that day. Transit vehicles passing through on a one-way route are also covered until 7pm on the day of payment. Do not interpret this as a multi-day pass — it governs same-day movements, not your entire safari.

Passengers pay UGX 5,000 per crossing regardless of direction. A couple in a hired 4×4 with a driver therefore pays UGX 20,000 for the vehicle plus UGX 10,000 for two passengers — UGX 30,000 one way. The driver pays nothing.

Ferry Schedule and Special Crossings

The Paraa ferry typically operates between 07:00 and 19:00, with scheduled departures commonly at 07:00, 09:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 19:00. The pontoon carries roughly eight vehicles; peak-season queues at the 07:00 and 16:00 runs can add 20–30 minutes beyond the sailing itself. Arrive early — there is no reservation system.

UWA may arrange special crossings outside the published timetable for an additional charge — useful in an emergency, but not something to plan around. Maintenance, high water or mechanical issues can delay or cancel sailings; confirm the day’s times with your lodge or the Paraa tourism desk on arrival. Paraa Bridge — Do You Still Pay Ferry Fees?

UWA has invested in a Paraa Bridge across the Victoria Nile, and many itineraries now cross by road rather than waiting for the pontoon. The bridge gives a permanent link between southern lodges, the Top of the Falls and northern Buligi tracks — a significant improvement over relying solely on the hourly ferry timetable.

When the bridge is open to tourist traffic, you may not need the ferry at all. When the ferry remains in service — during bridge works, weight restrictions or local UWA direction — the tariff above applies. Confirm which crossing is active when you book; lodge managers and park rangers at Paraa have the current position. A separate bridge on the Karuma–Pakwach corridor lies far to the east and is not a substitute for the central Paraa crossing — using it adds substantial driving time without replacing the Buligi access point.

When You Can Avoid Ferry Charges Entirely

Ferry fees only matter when you physically cross the Nile at Paraa. Several routing choices eliminate them:

Fly-in to Pakuba or Chobe: Light aircraft from Entebbe reach Pakuba airstrip, about 19 kilometres from Paraa, in roughly one hour — you land on the northern bank and drive straight to the tracks.

Southern-bank-only itineraries: If you skip Buligi game drives and focus on the launch cruise, Top of the Falls hike, Budongo chimps and delta birding from the south bank, you may never need the ferry — though you will miss the park’s best savannah game viewing.

Ferry fees sit in shillings while park entry is quoted in US dollars — carry both. At a rough exchange rate of UGX 3,700 to US$1, UGX 20,000 equals about US$5–6 per vehicle crossing; UGX 5,000 per passenger is roughly US$1.35.

Two-night safari, southern lodge, daily Buligi drives (ferry both ways each day): three game-drive days × two crossings × UGX 20,000 = UGX 120,000 vehicle ferry total, plus UGX 5,000 per passenger per crossing for anyone beyond the driver.

Single north–south round trip (one game-drive day): UGX 40,000 vehicle + passenger fees — modest in isolation, but stacked on top of US$45 park entry, US$25 ranger, US$150 tour-vehicle gate fee and US$10 Murchison vehicle surcharge per 24 hours. Packaged safaris often absorb ferry costs in the overall quote — ask your operator whether UGX ferry charges are included or payable in cash at Paraa. Paying and Keeping Receipts

Ferry fees are collected at the Paraa jetty or the nearby UWA tourism office — pay before boarding. Keep every receipt; rangers and gate staff may ask for proof of payment alongside your park entry ticket. Ferry payment does not extend your 24-hour park entry clock or replace vehicle gate fees paid at Kichumbanyobo.

Organised tours typically settle ferry charges through the operator’s float. If you are self-driving, budget UGX 50,000–150,000 in ferry cash for a standard three-day itinerary with daily north-bank drives — more if you are in a heavier vehicle class or crossing more frequently than planned.
