After registration at Nyakalengija, meet the guides, porters and mountain cook, then begin the Central Circuit through Bakonzo farmland and into montane rainforest. The steadily climbing trail crosses streams and can be muddy, with chances to see colobus or blue monkeys, chameleons and forest birds.

Reach Nyabitaba Hut on a ridge above the Mubuku Valley, change into dry clothing and enjoy a hot meal. This is basic shared mountain-hut accommodation with limited facilities and no private bathrooms.

Descend through forest to the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku rivers and cross the Kurt Schaffer Bridge. Continue on a sustained ascent through bamboo, giant-heather vegetation, moss-covered trees and mountain streams.

The route is steep, rocky and often slippery, so waterproof clothing should remain accessible. Arrive at John Matte Hut near the Bujuku River, where colder evening temperatures call for dry layers and an early rest.

Continue toward Lake Bujuku and Bujuku Hut beneath the slopes of Scott Elliot Pass. At almost 4,000 metres, walk steadily, drink regularly and tell your guide immediately about any altitude symptoms.

Continue to exposed Elena Hut, the summit base camp for Margherita Peak. After an early meal, the guide checks harnesses, helmets, crampons, ropes, headlamps and warm summit clothing before the night’s rest.

Start around midnight or in the early morning for the guided Margherita Peak summit attempt. Using headlamps, follow the specialist guide across steep rock, snow and glacier terrain; ropes, crampons, harnesses, helmets and ice axes may be required according to current conditions.

At 5,109 metres, Margherita Peak is Uganda’s highest point, but success is never guaranteed. The guide may turn the group back for weather, glacier, altitude or safety reasons before the long descent via Elena Hut to Kitandara Hut near the lakes.

Continue through the Kabamba Valley to Guy Yeoman Hut. The day remains physically demanding after the summit attempt, so take regular breaks, stay hydrated and report any injury or altitude symptoms to the guide.

Complete park exit procedures, say farewell to the mountain support team and transfer to Kasese for a hot shower and a well-earned evening of rest after the expedition.
