For decades, northern Uganda sat off the main safari circuit while conflict kept travellers on the Kampala–Masindi corridor. That has changed. Gulu City is now a practical gateway to Murchison Falls National Park — close enough for a morning game drive, rich in Acholi culture, and well placed on the road to Kidepo Valley.

Gulu City: Northern Uganda’s Hub

Gulu sits on the Acholi plateau at about 1,100 metres elevation — cooler than the lakeshore and comfortable for walking around town. It lies 333 kilometres north of Kampala on the Gulu Highway, and roughly 321 kilometres south of Juba, making it a natural stop on overland routes between Uganda’s capital and South Sudan.

The city became operational on 1 July 2020, one of Uganda’s first regional cities. The 2024 census recorded about 232,723 residents. Banks, hospitals, supermarkets and a busy main market supply everything a multi-day safari needs. Gulu Airport (ULU), four kilometres from the centre, has a 3,100-metre asphalt runway — Uganda’s second-longest after Entebbe — though most safari guests reach the park by road.

The Tangi Gate Route from Gulu

Murchison’s northern edge lies in Nwoya District, part of the Acholi sub-region. From Gulu, drive south through Purongo and Anaka toward Tangi Gate, near Pakwach on the Victoria Nile — roughly 100 to 115 kilometres and two to three hours on mostly tarmac roads.

Tangi opens directly onto the northern savannah — Rothschild giraffe, elephant herds, buffalo, lion and leopard on the Buligi, Pakuba and Victoria tracks. The Pakuba track connects Buligi to Tangi in 17 kilometres, so you need not double back through Masindi. Wankwar and Chobe gates offer further northern entries on the Kampala–Pakwach corridor; from Tangi, allow about an hour to reach Paraa and the UWA ferry if your lodge sits south of the Nile. Why the Northern Sector Suits Gulu-Based Safaris

The Victoria Nile divides Murchison into two banks. The northern bank holds the densest wildlife — open savannah where the Buligi Peninsula track stretches over 160 kilometres. Enter via Tangi and you are among elephant and giraffe within an hour, not after a half-day drive from Masindi.

Park entry for foreign non-residents is US$45 per adult per 24 hours under the July 2024–June 2026 UWA tariff, with children aged 5–15 at US$25. Gates open at 07:00 and close at 19:00. A typical Gulu loop: enter Tangi by mid-morning, game drive through Pakuba and Buligi, take a Paraa launch cruise to the foot of the falls, and return to Gulu or stay at a north-bank lodge. Gulu also sets up a clean onward route to Kidepo Valley, roughly 300 kilometres via Kitgum — about four to five hours — without looping back through Kampala.

Acholi Culture Around Gulu and the Park

The Acholi people give this landscape its cultural identity. Elephants hold a sacred place in Acholi tradition — symbols of strength, ancestry and peace — which is why a prominent elephant statue greets visitors arriving in Gulu. Conservation and community recovery here are intertwined, not separate conversations.

Living culture shows up in drumming, dance and food — the royal Bwola circle dance, the harp-backed Larakaraka and the shield dance Otole, alongside kwon kal millet bread and malakwang greens. Fort Patiko, Baker’s Fort on Ocecu Hill about 30 to 40 kilometres north of Gulu, was completed on Christmas Day 1872 and later occupied by Gordon and Emin Pasha. Post-Conflict Tourism and a Region Reopening

The Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency kept northern Uganda off tourist maps for roughly two decades. Fighting eased in the mid-2000s, and Gulu transformed from an IDP-camp hub into a thriving commercial city — a shift visible in new hotels, restored roads and events that draw visitors from across Uganda and abroad.

Tourism is part of that recovery. The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities has promoted community-based tourism (CBT) training across the Acholi sub-region, and events like the Gulu City Oktoberfest at Kaunda grounds blend Acholi dance and local cuisine with international hospitality. Sensitive memorial sites such as Lukodi, less than 20 kilometres from Gulu, mark civilian losses from the conflict years — visit them with a local guide and follow their lead.
