Downstream from Paraa toward Lake Albert, the river braids through papyrus channels holding shoebill stork, pelicans, herons and otters. Longer than the upstream cruise (4–5 hours), costing roughly US$35–55 depending on boat. Best in morning with calm water and active fishing birds.
Serious birders should not skip this; casual visitors with one boat day should choose upstream unless shoebill is a life-list priority.
3. Queen Elizabeth — Kazinga Channel
A 40-kilometre natural channel linking Lake George and Lake Edward, the Kazinga boat passes the world’s densest hippo concentration by some counts, alongside buffalo, elephant, crocodile and hundreds of waterbirds. UWA launch about US$30. Departures morning and afternoon from Mweya.
Easy to combine with Ishasha tree-climbing lions on a two-night Queen Elizabeth stay. Flat water suits photographers and families.
4. Lake Mburo — Lake Cruise
Uganda’s smallest savannah park offers a 2-hour lake boat among hippo, crocodile, African finfoot and woodland birds along the shoreline. Less dramatic than the Nile but excellent on a Kampala–Murchison circuit break — zebra and impala visible from water’s edge.

5. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — Shoebill Canoe
