Why fly to Murchison Falls?
Murchison sits roughly 305 kilometres north-west of Kampala. By road that translates to a realistic 5–7 hours once you account for Kampala traffic, fuel stops and the final approach through Masindi to Kichumbanyobo or Bugungu Gate. For travellers with limited holiday time, honeymooners, families with young children, or anyone combining Murchison with gorilla trekking in Bwindi, that road day is a significant sacrifice.
A domestic flight from Entebbe International Airport lands you at one of three park airstrips in about 60 minutes. From there a lodge transfer — usually 15 to 45 minutes depending on which strip you use — puts you at your accommodation in time for an afternoon boat cruise or game drive. Many guests fly in and drive out, or vice versa, to balance cost against comfort.
The three Murchison airstrips: Pakuba, Chobe and Bugungu
Murchison Falls is served by three grass/murram airstrips, each positioned for a different part of the park. Choosing the right one matters because the park is large and the Nile divides it into distinct sectors.
Pakuba Airstrip sits on the northern bank near Paraa, with views towards Lake Albert. It is the busiest strip and the most practical choice for lodges around Paraa, the Buligi game-drive circuit, Nile boat cruises and delta shoebill trips. The runway stretches roughly 1,760 metres and is managed by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority.
Chobe Airstrip lies to the east near Chobe Safari Lodge and the Chobe Gate sector. It suits travellers staying at Chobe or exploring the eastern reaches of the park, including the Tangi area approaching from the north.
Bugungu Airstrip is on the southern boundary near Bugungu Gate, convenient for south-bank lodges such as Baker’s Lodge, Nile Safari Lodge and Murchison River Lodge. Guests arriving here still cross the Nile at Paraa for northern-bank game drives unless their itinerary focuses on Budongo Forest and the southern sectors.
Scheduled flights: Aerolink Uganda
Aerolink Uganda operates the main scheduled domestic service linking Entebbe with Uganda’s national parks. For Murchison, flight A8 121 departs Entebbe at 13:00 and arrives at Pakuba, Chobe or Bugungu around 14:00. The return flight A8 122 departs the park at 14:20 and reaches Entebbe by approximately 17:15, allowing same-day connections to western parks on certain routings.
The Murchison service runs daily except March, April, May and November, when scheduled flights to the park are suspended. During those months, charter is the only air option. Aerolink uses Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft, and flights require a minimum of four passengers per airstrip to operate — smaller groups may be rescheduled or rerouted.

Charters also allow early-morning arrivals, which scheduled flights cannot offer.
Connecting flights to other parks
One of Aerolink’s most useful features is same-day linkage from Murchison to western Uganda. After the 14:20 departure from Pakuba or Chobe, passengers can connect to Kasese (Queen Elizabeth / Kibale) or Kihihi (Bwindi) on the afternoon routing, subject to minimum passenger loads. This makes a Murchison-plus-gorillas itinerary feasible in a week without excessive road time.
Fly Uganda and other operators also offer ad hoc connections, though Aerolink’s network is the most established. Your safari operator should book the full routing as a single itinerary to avoid missed connections.
What happens after you land
None of the Murchison airstrips are walking distance to lodges or park gates. Every fly-in guest needs a pre-arranged vehicle transfer — typically a lodge safari vehicle or your operator’s 4×4. Transfers from Pakuba to Paraa take about 20 minutes; from Bugungu to the ferry crossing, expect 30 to 45 minutes depending on lodge location.
Your lodge or tour operator should meet you on the airstrip with a sign and cold drinks. UWA park entry fees are separate from flight costs and must be arranged in advance or paid at the gate. If your first activity is a northern-bank game drive, remember the Paraa ferry links the two sides of the Nile — your lodge will schedule crossings around activity times.
