Murchison Falls National Park covers roughly 3,840 square kilometres along the Victoria Nile. Game drives on the northern bank produce elephant, buffalo, Uganda kob, hartebeest and lion, while the park holds one of the continent’s strongest Rothschild’s giraffe populations — well over 1,500 animals. The launch cruise from Paraa upstream to the foot of the falls, where the entire Nile is forced through a seven-metre gorge, remains one of Uganda’s defining experiences.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a 996-square-kilometre UNESCO site on Uganda’s border with the DRC, sheltering 70 mammal species and 217 bird species including 19 Albertine Rift endemics. Most visitors come for multi-day treks through bamboo and moorland to ice-capped peaks.

How long you need depends on whether you aim for Margherita Peak or a day walk. Most combinations run ten to fourteen days; a day-hike version can work in seven to eight.
Days 1–4 at Murchison: Drive north from Entebbe or Kampala — four to five hours via Masindi — with an optional stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (176 km from Kampala). Cross the Paraa ferry (07:00–19:00) for northern-bank game drives and the afternoon Nile launch cruise. UWA boats depart Paraa at 09:00 and 14:00.
Day 5 — transfer south-west: By road from Murchison to Kasese, the Rwenzori gateway, is roughly 290 to 400 km via Hoima and Fort Portal, typically six to eight hours. The Fort Portal–Kasese leg covers about 75 km of winding mountain road and needs two to three hours. Many travellers break the journey with an overnight in Fort Portal or a stop in Queen Elizabeth National Park, 50 km east of Kasese.
Days 6–12 — summit trek: The Central Circuit from Nyakalengija (1,650 m) and the Kilembe Trail from Kilembe, 12 km south of Kasese, both run seven to nine days to Margherita Peak, using mountain huts and UWA rangers. Build at least one rest day in Kasese before you start. The Mahoma Trail offers a single-day forest alternative if a full summit is not realistic.
Getting between the parks
Murchison and the Rwenzori sit at opposite ends of Uganda’s western arc — about 305 km and five hours from Kampala to Murchison, versus 380 km and seven to eight hours to Kasese. Aerolink Uganda connects Entebbe with Murchison airstrips and Kasese in about 75 minutes; Pakuba to Kasese requires a minimum of four passengers and is suspended March–May and November on the 2026 timetable. On the mountain: trails and fitness
The Central Circuit follows the Mubuku Valley to hut camps such as Nyabitaba (2,651 m), John Matte (3,505 m) and Bujuku (3,962 m) before the Elena Glacier — roughly 58 km round trip and 3,500 metres of cumulative ascent. The Kilembe Trail passes nine high lakes and tends to feel quieter. Both routes are genuinely demanding; good fitness and prior hiking above 3,000 metres help, though porters carry food and shared kit.
Permits, park fees and budget
Under the UWA tariff valid July 2024–June 2026, foreign non-residents pay US$35 per person per day for Rwenzori park entry plus US$50 for the mountain hiking activity fee — US$245 in entry fees alone on a seven-day trek, before operator costs. All-inclusive Margherita packages typically run US$1,400–2,500 per person. At Murchison, entry is US$45 per 24 hours, the Nile launch US$30 and game drives US$25 per vehicle. A mid-range twelve-day combination with one fly leg typically lands around US$4,500–7,000 per person.
Best time to travel
The drier windows — June to September and December to February — give the firmest Rwenzori trails and reliable Murchison game viewing. April, May and October to November bring heavier rain but greener scenery and fewer vehicles.
Accommodation and pacing
Around Murchison, most travellers base near Paraa; in Kasese, pre- and post-trek hotels range from guesthouses to base camps, while on the mountain you sleep in basic huts. We usually insert a rest night in Kasese — often via Queen Elizabeth or Fort Portal — before a summit attempt rather than driving straight from the savannah.
