Uganda Safari Checklist
A Uganda safari checklist is less about ticking boxes and more about arriving prepared for long dusty drives, sudden rain showers, and the moment a lion walks across the track in front of you. Forget one essential item and you spend the morning squinting through binoculars you left in Kampala; get the basics right and you can focus entirely on the wildlife.
This checklist covers documents, health, clothing, optics, electronics, and the small practical items our guides see travellers forget most often. It is written for itineraries that include Murchison Falls National Park — Uganda’s largest savannah reserve — though most items apply across Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth and Kibale as well.
Documents and Money
Carry a passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Uganda issues visas on arrival and online via the official e-visa portal; keep a printed or offline copy of your approval email. Bring US dollars in small denominations (post-2006 notes) for tips, park fees if paying cash, and emergencies. Many lodges accept cards but rural fuel stations and village markets do not. Photocopies of your passport and travel insurance stored separately from the original save hours if a bag goes missing.
Save offline maps and lodge confirmation PDFs before leaving Entebbe. Mobile data works in towns but drops inside park boundaries. A waterproof document pouch keeps papers dry during boat cruises where spray from Murchison Falls soaks everything on deck.
Health and Medication
Consult a travel clinic six to eight weeks before departure. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for Murchison — the Victoria Nile corridor is low-lying and mosquito-prone year-round. Pack DEET-based repellent, long sleeves for evening, and confirm your accommodation provides mosquito nets.
A basic medical kit should include antihistamines, rehydration salts, plasters, anti-diarrhoea medication, and any prescription drugs in original labelled containers. Sunscreen (SPF 30+), lip balm, and after-sun lotion matter on open-top game drives where shade is limited.
Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is not optional for remote parks. The nearest serious hospital to Murchison is in Masindi or Gulu — hours away on murram roads. Keep your policy number and emergency hotline on your phone lock screen.
Clothing and Footwear
Neutral colours — khaki, olive, grey — blend into bush and do not startle wildlife. Avoid bright white and blue, which attract tsetse flies in some areas. Layer for cool dawn drives (especially June–August) and hot afternoons; a light fleece or windbreaker is enough.
Sturdy closed shoes are essential for the Top of the Falls hike and any walking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Sandals are fine around lodge grounds only. A wide-brimmed hat and polarised sunglasses reduce glare on water during Nile boat cruises.
Pack a lightweight rain jacket even in dry season — afternoon storms appear quickly. For gorilla or chimp trekking elsewhere in Uganda, add gaiters and gardening gloves; not needed at Murchison unless you join Budongo Forest walks.
Optics, Camera and Tech

Bring extra memory cards and a portable battery bank — charging points exist at mid-range lodges but not in vehicles. A head torch helps for night walks and early-morning packing. Universal adapters (UK-style three-pin plugs are standard in Uganda) fit most lodge sockets.

Day-Pack Essentials for Game Drives
Each morning drive from Paraa should include water (at least one litre per person), snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and your camera with a charged battery. Dust gets everywhere — lens cloths and zip-lock bags help.
Cash for ranger tips (US$10–15 per drive is customary) and any craft purchases at community stops. Wet wipes and hand sanitiser are useful when picnic lunches are eaten beside the track.
If you take the Paraa ferry to the northern bank for Buligi Peninsula drives, keep your park receipt accessible — rangers check at gate points. The ferry runs roughly 07:00–19:00; missing the first crossing costs the best predator light.
Pre-Departure Home Checklist
