For travellers already in the north, the drive via Tangi Gate is the sensible choice: shorter than looping back through Kampala and Masindi, and it drops you straight onto the park’s best game-viewing savannah.

Distance and drive time from Gulu
From Gulu town centre to Tangi Gate, plan on roughly 100 to 115 kilometres and two to three hours of driving. Local operators sometimes quote closer to three hours when accounting for Purongo market traffic, cattle on the road and the murram stretch before the boom.
That makes Gulu one of the closest major towns to Murchison’s northern sector — a fraction of the five to six hours from Kampala via Masindi. A same-day safari is feasible with a pre-dawn departure; an overnight inside the park is more relaxed.
The route: Gulu, Purongo and the Pakwach road
Leave Gulu heading south on the surfaced road toward Anaka and Purongo — roughly 65 kilometres of tarmac through Acholi farmland. Purongo is the junction where northern itineraries split.
For Tangi Gate, stay on the main Karuma–Pakwach highway and continue west from Purongo for about 50 kilometres — roughly an hour on good tarmac. The turn-off sits on this corridor, signposted roughly 700 metres before the Pakwach Bridge crosses the Albert Nile. The gate itself lies about one kilometre south of the main road on a short murram spur.
Do not confuse this with the turn south toward Wankwar Gate, which branches off roughly 10 kilometres below Purongo. Wankwar suits travellers heading directly toward Paraa; Tangi serves those approaching from Gulu, Arua, Nebbi and the wider West Nile region along the Pakwach corridor.
Why Tangi Gate suits Gulu travellers
Tangi opens onto the northern bank of the Victoria Nile — the sector most guides consider the richest for wildlife. Elephants, buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffe, lion and large antelope concentrate on the Buligi Peninsula and the plains around Pakuba. Enter here and you are on game tracks within minutes, with no ferry crossing required for north-bank drives.
Paraa — the hub for boat cruises and the launch to the foot of the falls — lies roughly 45 to 60 kilometres inside the park, about an hour on murram. Reaching the Top of the Falls or south-bank lodges requires the Paraa ferry (07:00–19:00). Tangi works best for north-bank lodges and game drives.

Road conditions and vehicle choice
The Gulu–Purongo leg and the Purongo–Pakwach highway are predominantly tarmac, maintained as part of the northern transport corridor linking Kampala, Gulu and South Sudan. Expect occasional potholes after heavy rain, but standard vehicles manage this section in the dry season.
Surfaces change near the gate. The spur to Tangi and internal park tracks are unsurfaced murram — firm in dry months, greasy in March–May and October–November rains. A high-clearance 4×4 is essential. Fill your tank in Gulu; there is no fuel inside the park.
Park entry, fees and gate hours
Uganda Wildlife Authority operates Tangi Gate under the same rules as every other entrance. Gates open at 07:00 and close at 19:00; plan to reach the boom with daylight to spare.
Foreign non-resident adults pay US$45 per 24 hours (children aged five to fifteen US$25; under-fives free). Activity fees such as boat cruises are charged separately. The in-park speed limit is 40 km/h, strictly enforced.
Tangi compared with Wankwar and Chobe
All three northern gates serve the same savannah, but each fits a different approach road. Wankwar Gate, about 10 km south of Purongo, suits travellers who have turned off the main highway and want the shortest run toward Paraa. Chobe Gate, two to three kilometres north of Karuma Bridge on the Kampala–Gulu highway, is the natural entry for guests at Chobe Safari Lodge or anyone driving the eastern corridor from Kampala.
