Five days is enough for a focused Uganda safari if you choose one region and accept that you are not seeing the whole country. Itinerary 1: Murchison Falls Intensive (Best for First Timers)
Day 1: Drive from Entebbe to Murchison (6–7 hours) via Masindi. Optional stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — two-hour tracking, permit about US$50. Enter via Kichumbanyobo or Bugungu gate. Overnight southern or northern bank.
Day 2: Early ferry to northern bank. Morning game drive on Buligi circuit — Rothschild’s giraffe, elephant, lion if you are lucky. Afternoon launch cruise to the falls base (US$30 UWA fee).
Day 3: Morning delta shoebill cruise or second game drive. Afternoon at leisure or community visit.
Day 4: Chimp trek in Budongo Forest (Kaniyo Pabidi, permit about US$130) or top-of-falls viewpoint hike (US$15).
Day 5: Return to Entebbe, exiting via the falls viewpoint if you have not yet been.
Why it works: One park, minimal packing and unpacking, covers boat, drive, primates and rhinos en route. Park entry US$45 per person per 24 hours.
Itinerary 2: Murchison Fly-In (Best for Limited Holiday Time)
Day 1: Morning charter Entebbe to Pakuba or Bugungu airstrip (roughly 1 hour flight). Afternoon game drive.
Day 2: Full Buligi game drive at dawn. Afternoon boat cruise.
Day 3: Delta cruise for shoebill or fishing on the Nile (catch-and-release, permits apply).
Day 4: Repeat favourite activity or Budongo chimps if road transfer arranged.
Day 5: Fly back to Entebbe.
Why it works: Recovers two full days lost to driving. Flight cost is significant but transforms a rushed trip into a proper safari.
Itinerary 3: Murchison + Lake Mburo (Best Variety Without Gorillas)
Days 1–3: As per Itinerary 1, compressed — two nights Murchison with boat and one game drive.
Day 4: Drive south to Lake Mburo (4–5 hours). Afternoon boat on Lake Mburo — hippo, crocodile, waterbirds.
Day 5: Morning guided walk with ranger (unique in Uganda’s savannah parks). Return toward Entebbe (4 hours).
Why it works: Adds zebra, impala and walking safari without the western circuit drive to Bwindi. Lake Mburo entry about US$40 per person.
Itinerary 4: Western Primates Express (Ambitious — Gorillas Required)
Only attempt this if you fly at least one leg. Day 1: Entebbe to Bwindi (fly to Kisoro or Kihihi). Day 2: Gorilla trek (permit US$800, or US$600 April/May/November). Day 3: Fly or drive to Queen Elizabeth — Kazinga Channel boat. Day 4: Ishasha tree-climbing lions, transfer north. Day 5: Murchison game drive en route to Entebbe or fly from Pakuba.
Why it is tight: You touch three parks but sacrifice depth. We recommend seven days for this route; five is for travellers who accept long travel days.
Season and Booking Notes
Dry seasons (June–September, December–February) offer easier roads and better game viewing. Wet months are greener and cheaper, with discounted gorilla permits in April, May and November if Itinerary 4 appeals.
Book gorilla permits months ahead. Murchison lodges fill at Christmas and July–August. Ferry queues at Paraa are rare but build your game-drive timing around the first crossing of the day.
