Bwindi Impenetrable National Park hosts the majority of Uganda’s habituated mountain gorilla families, spread across four trekking sectors hours apart by road. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, at the southern tip on the border with Rwanda and DRC, protects one transboundary family in a dramatic volcanic setting — Virunga volcanoes as backdrop, golden monkeys as bonus.
Choosing between them affects permit logistics, trek difficulty, drive times from Entebbe and what else you combine on the same trip.
Bwindi: Scale and Choice
Bwindi holds roughly half the world’s mountain gorillas across sectors: Buhoma (north, oldest tourism infrastructure), Ruhija (east, higher elevation), Rushaga and Nkuringo (south, steeper terrain). Multiple families mean permit availability is better — critical in peak season.
Permit: US$800 foreign non-residents (US$600 April, May, November). Trek: 1–6 hours typical, steep muddy forest. Age minimum 15.
Combine with Queen Elizabeth (Ishasha 5–7 hours) or fly Kihihi from Entebbe. Lodge range from budget bandas to Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge.
Mgahinga: Intimate and Volcanic
One main habituated gorilla group (Nyakagezi) historically moved across borders — confirm current residence with UWA before booking. Smaller park, often shorter treks but steep volcanic slopes. Golden monkey tracking (separate permit ~US$60) is excellent here.
Access from Kisoro town — 8–9 hours from Entebbe or fly Kisoro airstrip. Natural add-on: volcano hiking (Muhabura, Gahinga, Sabyinyo) for fit travellers.
Permit same US$800 as Bwindi — one permit works for either park but is sector/family specific on booking.
Trek Difficulty Comparison
Neither is easy. Bwindi’s sectors vary — Ruhija and Nkuringo can be longest and steepest. Mgahinga’s bamboo zone and volcanic ash paths challenge knees differently. Assignment is by park on permit day, not fitness preference — reasonable mobility required for both.
Which to Choose
Choose Bwindi for permit availability, lodge choice, habituation experiences (Rushaga), and standard gorilla tourism infrastructure.
Choose Mgahinga for volcanic scenery, golden monkeys, border-region adventure, and travellers already visiting Kisoro or crossing from Rwanda’s Volcanoes NP (Cyanika border nearby).
Combine both only with multiple permits and 2+ nights — sectors are not day-trip distance apart.
