Budongo Eco Lodge is located in the heart of the Kaniyo Pabidi ecotourism site, within Budongo Central Forest Reserve on the southern boundary of Murchison Falls National Park. The lodge sits approximately 30 kilometres north of Masindi town, along the paved Masindi–Paraa road that leads through the forest towards the park's southern sector and the Kichumbanyobo Gate. This position makes it the only accommodation in the immediate vicinity of Budongo's chimpanzee tracking trailhead.
Because the lodge lies inside the forest rather than on the open savannah, guests experience a completely different side of the Murchison Falls conservation area. The surrounding rainforest is one of the largest natural forest blocks in East Africa, covering roughly 793 square kilometres of mahogany and ironwood woodland. From the lodge, well-maintained forest paths lead directly to the chimpanzee tracking starting point, birding trails, and guided nature walks — all within a few minutes' walk of the reception area.
Where Exactly Is Budongo Eco Lodge?
Budongo Eco Lodge is found at the Kaniyo Pabidi visitor centre in Budongo Central Forest Reserve, a southern extension of the greater Murchison Falls Conservation Area in north-western Uganda. The forest forms the boundary between the Albertine Rift escarpment and the park's southern savannah, and the lodge is positioned almost at the entrance to this remarkable protected area. The paved road from Masindi passes through the forest canopy before reaching the lodge, giving arriving guests an immediate sense of entering a wild and ancient landscape.
Access from Masindi and Kampala
Most visitors reach Budongo Eco Lodge by road. From Masindi, the drive north along the Masindi–Paraa road takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes, depending on road conditions and stops. From Kampala or Entebbe, the full journey typically takes four to five hours, commonly following the route through Luweero and Nakasongola — often with a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — before continuing via Masindi to the forest.
The lodge is one of the most easily accessed forest accommodations in Uganda because it sits directly on a tarmac road rather than requiring a long drive on rough tracks. Self-drive visitors can reach the lodge without a four-wheel-drive vehicle, though a sturdy vehicle is recommended for onward travel within the national park.
Connection to Murchison Falls National Park
Although Budongo Eco Lodge is set in rainforest rather than savannah, it lies within the boundaries of Murchison Falls National Park and close to the Kichumbanyobo Gate. From the lodge, guests can continue north along the paved road towards Paraa for game drives, Nile boat cruises, and visits to the top of the falls. The Kaniyo Pabidi trailhead now lies inside the main park entrance gate, so chimp treks can be arranged en route to, or as a day trip from, lodges elsewhere in the park.
This strategic position allows travellers to combine chimpanzee tracking with classic Murchison Falls activities within a single itinerary. A typical plan might include one or two nights at Budongo for the chimps and forest walks, followed by two or three nights at a lodge near Paraa or in the northern sector for savannah game viewing.
Why the Location Matters
Location is the single greatest advantage of Budongo Eco Lodge. No other accommodation in the Murchison Falls area places guests at the chimpanzee tracking trailhead. Staying elsewhere means an early-morning drive through the forest before the trek begins; staying at Budongo means stepping out of your cabin and into the rainforest within minutes.
