Why combine Murchison Falls and Mount Elgon
Mount Elgon National Park covers roughly 1,121 square kilometres on the Uganda–Kenya border, centred on a volcano that last erupted more than 24 million years ago. Its highest point, Wagagai, reaches 4,321 metres — the eighth-highest massif in Africa and Uganda’s second-highest peak after the Rwenzori. The summit rim encloses a caldera about eight kilometres across, and forest elephants visit volcanic caves such as Kitum to lick mineral salts from the walls.
Murchison Falls National Park spans roughly 3,840 square kilometres along the Victoria Nile and protects one of the strongest remaining Rothschild’s giraffe populations on the continent. The signature activity is the UWA launch cruise from Paraa upstream to the foot of the falls. You will not find giraffe on Elgon’s slopes — that contrast is precisely the point: forest primates and alpine moorland in the east, lion tracks and hippo pods on the Nile in the north-west.
Routing and drive times
Most travellers start in the east and finish at Murchison. Kampala to Mbale via Jinja is roughly 230 to 250 kilometres (four to five hours); Sipi Falls is another 55 kilometres north-east of Mbale. The Mbale-to-Murchison leg runs 388 to 415 kilometres via Soroti and Lira, taking six to eight hours. Enter from the north via Tangi, Wankwar or Chobe Gate; the southern route through Kichumbanyobo Gate suits a Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary stop. Gates open 07:00–19:00; a high-clearance 4×4 is essential.
Suggested itinerary: eight to ten days
Days 1–3: Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon
Transfer to the Sipi area and settle into a lodge overlooking the falls. Day two: hike the Sipi Falls circuit — three cascades over basalt cliffs outside the park boundary — or a forest walk from the Forest Exploration Centre, where blue monkey and black-and-white colobus are common. Day three: a longer hike on the Sasa trail from Budadiri (steep, more than 1,600 metres ascent on day one) or the gentler Piswa trail via Kapkwata. Collect permits at the UWA headquarters in Mbale before setting out.
Day 4: Transfer to Murchison Falls
Depart early for the drive north-west via Soroti and Lira, with an optional rhino walk at Ziwa. Check in at a north-bank lodge at Pakuba or Chobe to avoid the Paraa ferry on dawn game drives.
Days 5–6: Murchison Falls National Park
Morning game drive on the Buligi Peninsula for Rothschild’s giraffe, elephant, buffalo and lion; afternoon Nile launch cruise upstream over about 17 kilometres past hippo pods and crocodiles. Day six: the Top of the Falls viewpoint or a second drive, with optional chimpanzee tracking at Kaniyo Pabidi in Budongo Forest on the return south.
Days 7–8: Return or extend
Drive back to Entebbe via Masindi (five to six hours from Paraa) or add a delta shoebill cruise. Fly-out guests can connect from Pakuba airstrip on Aerolink when dates align.
Highlights at each destination
On Mount Elgon, UWA records more than 300 bird species, including lammergeyer on the high moorland. Forest elephant, buffalo and primates appear on lower trails; the full summit circuit takes four to five days, though many travellers stop at Sipi day hikes.

Park fees and activity costs
Under the UWA tariff valid July 2024–June 2026, foreign non-resident adults pay US$35 per 24 hours at Mount Elgon and US$45 per 24 hours at Murchison Falls. Elgon hiking permits cost US$50 per person per day, separate from park entry. At Murchison, day game drives are US$25 per guide, the launch cruise US$30, and the Top of the Falls hike US$15.
Best time to travel
Dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer the firmest trails, clearest Sipi views and the best Nile game viewing. Pack waterproof layers for Elgon year-round; green-season months bring excellent birding and fewer vehicles at Murchison.
Accommodation options
Sipi lodges range from guesthouses to mid-range falls-view properties; Elgon summit treks use UWA camping huts. At Murchison, lodges cluster at Paraa, Pakuba and Chobe — south-bank stays require the Paraa ferry (07:00–19:00).
