Uganda Big Five safaris are built around a simple truth that catches many first-time planners off guard: no single national park holds all five species. Lion, leopard, elephant and Cape buffalo roam the savannah reserves, but the rhinoceros was hunted to local extinction by the early 1980s and survives today only at a dedicated sanctuary north of Kampala. A proper Big Five safari connects two or three stops into one route — and the strongest of those routes runs through Murchison Falls.

What a Uganda Big Five safari covers

The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo — is a wildlife checklist Uganda completes through a route rather than a single gate. Four species live inside UWA-managed savannah parks; the rhino requires a separate sanctuary stop north of Kampala.

Murchison Falls National Park — roughly 3,840 square kilometres — holds strong elephant and buffalo herds, lion prides on the northern Buligi plains, and leopards that reward patient dawn drives. Queen Elizabeth National Park adds the Kazinga Channel and Ishasha’s fig-tree lions. Kidepo Valley holds excellent lion and elephant for travellers with extra days.

The fifth species requires Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola District — a fenced ranch of about 70 square kilometres where southern white rhinos grew from six founding animals in 2005–2006 to roughly 48 individuals by mid-2025. Tracking on foot with armed rangers costs US$60 for foreign non-resident adults, including sanctuary entry and the trek.

The core circuit: Ziwa, Murchison and Queen Elizabeth

Geography makes the northern route the most efficient Big Five safari in Uganda. Ziwa sits roughly 176 kilometres north of Kampala on the Kampala–Gulu Highway — about three hours from Entebbe. From the sanctuary it is another 104 kilometres and one to two hours to Kichumbanyobo Gate near Masindi, then 85 kilometres through Budongo Forest to Paraa on the Victoria Nile.

Most Big Five searching happens on Murchison’s northern bank — Buligi and the delta fringe — reached via the Paraa ferry, running daily between 07:00 and 19:00. The upstream launch cruise from Paraa Jetty — departing at around 09:00 and 14:00 — adds crocodiles, hippo and elephants at the water’s edge. Foreign non-residents pay US$30 for the cruise under the current UWA tariff.

Safari lengths and finding each species

Four to five days covers the minimum viable route: rhino tracking at Ziwa on day one, two full nights at Murchison with a northern-bank dawn drive, a launch cruise and ideally a second morning drive to improve leopard odds. Seven to eight days adds Queen Elizabeth with breathing room before returning to Entebbe. Ten days or more opens Kibale, Bwindi or Kidepo without sacrificing Big Five quality. Fly-in options via Aerolink from Entebbe to Pakuba Airstrip in 60 to 90 minutes recover a full park day.

Rhino is the most predictable tick at Ziwa. Lion favours Buligi and Ishasha. Leopard is the hardest of the five — repeat dawn drives and night drives at Murchison, around US$40 per person for foreign non-residents, improve odds. Murchison also holds roughly 2,250 Nubian giraffe, the largest wild population of this critically endangered subspecies.

Fees, season and booking

Park entrance under the UWA tariff valid July 2024–June 2026 runs US$45 per 24 hours at Murchison, US$40 at Queen Elizabeth and Kidepo, plus activity fees for game drives and launch cruises. Ziwa’s rhino fee sits outside the UWA tariff at US$60 for foreign non-residents. A couple on a seven-day circuit should budget roughly US$300–400 in park and sanctuary fees alone.

Dry seasons from June to September and December to February firm murram roads and concentrate wildlife around permanent water. July and August are busiest; book lodges three months ahead for peak dates. UWA gate hours run 07:00 to 19:00. Avoid scheduling Entebbe to Murchison as a same-day arrival after an international flight — the 345-kilometre drive via Masindi takes five to six hours before you reach the park boundary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you see all Big Five animals in one Ugandan park?

No. Rhinos live only at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Lions, leopards, elephants and buffalo are found in Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth and Kidepo Valley, but completing the full five always requires combining Ziwa with at least one savannah park.

How many days do you need for a Uganda Big Five safari?
