Understand the Park Layout
Murchison is split by the Victoria Nile. The southern bank holds riverine forest, Budongo Forest Reserve, several lodges and access from Masindi via Kichumbanyobo gate. The northern bank is open savannah — the Buligi game-drive circuit, Pakuba airstrip and most lion and giraffe sightings.
The Paraa ferry connects the banks. Game drives happen north; the classic launch cruise departs from Paraa jetty (either bank, but timing ties to your lodge). Planning starts with choosing which bank to sleep on and scheduling ferry crossings accordingly.
Getting There: Road vs Air
Road from Entebbe/Kampala: 6–7 hours to Paraa via Masindi and Kichumbanyobo gate. Optional Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary stop (2 hours, permit about US$50). Requires 4×4, especially April–May and October–November.
Charter flight: Entebbe to Pakuba, Bugungu or Chobe airstrip in roughly one hour. Saves two travel days on a short itinerary. Most fly-in guests still need a lodge transfer vehicle inside the park.
Northern approach: Tangi or Wankwar gates from Pakwach/Gulu suit itineraries linking Kidepo or northern Uganda.
