Routes and gates: pick before you pack
Most road trips from Entebbe or Kampala follow the southern corridor: Kampala → Luweero → Kafu Bridge → Masindi → Kichumbanyobo Gate. From Kampala to Masindi is roughly 220 kilometres on sealed tarmac; from the gate to Paraa is another 85 to 86 kilometres of murram through Budongo Forest. Total distance from Kampala is approximately 305 kilometres — allow five to six hours without stops. From Entebbe, plan for six to seven hours covering roughly 320 to 345 kilometres.
An alternative enters via Bugungu Gate, about 135 kilometres west of Masindi through the rift escarpment above Lake Albert — slower but scenic. Northern gates at Tangi, Wankwar and Chobe serve arrivals from Gulu or Pakwach via Karuma Bridge. Unless you are looping the northern circuit, Masindi–Kichumbanyobo remains the default from Entebbe and Kampala.
3-day road trip: the classic circuit
The tightest credible itinerary suits Kampala-based travellers who leave before dawn. Day 1: Enter at Kichumbanyobo by mid-afternoon and check in near Paraa or Pakuba. With daylight to spare, visit the Top of the Falls — the Victoria Nile drops 43 metres through a gap barely six metres wide. Gates operate 07:00 to 19:00.
Day 2: Cross to Buligi Peninsula at first light via the Paraa Bridge (opened February 2021). A dawn game drive targets lion, elephant, buffalo and the world’s largest remaining wild population of Nubian (Rothschild’s) giraffe, estimated at around 2,250 individuals. Return for brunch, then the afternoon launch cruise from Paraa Jetty — departures at 09:00 and 14:00, around US$30 for foreign non-residents through June 2026.

4-day road trip: Ziwa rhinos and proper pace
Four days is what we recommend to most first-time visitors from Entebbe. Day 1: Stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, about 176 kilometres north with a turn-off at Nakitoma Trading Centre. Rhino trekking takes roughly 90 minutes to two hours; entry including the trek costs around US$60 for foreign non-residents. Continue to Kichumbanyobo — roughly 104 kilometres and one to two hours from Ziwa.
Day 2: Dawn Buligi drive with a UWA ranger guide (around US$25 per half-day), then the afternoon launch cruise past hippo pods and Nile crocodiles. Many guests hike 45 to 60 minutes through Fajao Gorge to the cliff-top viewpoint (around US$15). Day 3: Albert Delta shoebill cruise (best roughly January to March), chimp tracking at Kaniyo Pabidi (around US$130), or a second game drive. Day 4: Top of the Falls and the return drive.
5-day road trip: full park, less compression
Five days adds a delta morning, a second dawn drive and recovery time after long transfer days. Days 1 to 2 follow the four-day format. Day 3: Delta cruise or Budongo chimps. Day 4: Second Buligi drive, optional night drive for lodge guests (around US$40 per person), or a quieter midday falls visit. Day 5: Return via Masindi with fuel stops in Luwero or Nakasongola.

Practical road trip logistics
A high-clearance 4×4 is strongly recommended — internal park tracks are murram with a 40 km/h limit. Fill up in Kampala or Masindi; there is no fuel inside the park. Leave by 06:00 on transfer days and aim to clear gates before 19:00. The dry windows from June to September and December to February firm up tracks; wetter months bring greener scenery but slower Budongo approaches.
