Distance and drive times from Kampala

From Kampala to Paraa is about 305 kilometres (190 miles). Most organised safaris allow five to six hours with stops; an early-morning run can reach Masindi in under four hours, then another 1.5 to 2.5 hours through Budongo Forest to Paraa. If your lodge sits on the northern bank, add 30 to 45 minutes for the UWA vehicle ferry.

The journey splits into two legs: Kampala to Masindi on the Gulu Highway (roughly 200 kilometres of tarmac through Luweero and Nakasongola), then 16 kilometres east to Kichumbanyobo Gate and 85 kilometres through Kaniyo Pabidi to Paraa.

The Masindi route: Kichumbanyobo Gate

For visitors heading to Paraa, the Top of the Falls or southern-bank lodges, the Masindi route remains the default. Leave Kampala on the Kampala–Gulu Highway (A104), cross the Kafu River bridge and refuel in Masindi — the last dependable petrol stop before the park.

From Masindi, the road through Budongo Forest Reserve passes olive baboons, hornbills and occasionally chimpanzees. UWA gates open from 07:00 to 19:00. Continue to the Paraa ferry if your itinerary includes the northern Buligi game circuits — where lions, elephants, buffalo and Rothschild’s giraffe concentrate — or the launch cruise from Paraa Jetty.

The northern route: Karuma and Tangi Gate

If your lodge sits on the north bank — Pakuba, Chobe Safari Lodge or Nile Safari Lodge — or you are continuing toward Gulu and Kidepo Valley National Park, the northern corridor is often faster. Follow the Gulu Highway north to Karuma Falls, where Karuma Bridge spans the Nile. Kampala to Karuma is roughly 260 kilometres and typically four to five hours on tarmac.

Tangi Gate near Pakwach sits about 25 kilometres from Paraa on the north bank. Chobe Gate lies two to three kilometres north of Karuma Bridge. Both put you directly onto northern savannah tracks with no immediate Nile crossing — a clear advantage for dawn game drives on the Buligi Peninsula. If your lodge or the Top of the Falls sits south of the river, the Masindi route is usually simpler despite the ferry wait.

Timing your departure from Kampala

Traffic is the variable that most often turns a five-hour transfer into seven. Kampala’s northern bypass clogs between 07:30 and 10:00 on weekdays — depart by 07:00, lunch in Masindi around midday, enter Kichumbanyobo by 14:00–15:00 and cross the Paraa ferry before 16:00. Public transport from Kampala

Reaching Murchison by public transport is possible on a budget, but slow. Link Bus Services and other operators run daily coaches from Kampala to Masindi in roughly three to four hours, with fares typically US$18–27. There is no scheduled bus from Masindi into the park — you must hire a private taxi or shared minibus for the remaining 85 kilometres to Kichumbanyobo Gate.

The Paraa ferry crossing

The Victoria Nile divides the park at Paraa. Unless you entered through a northern gate and stay on that bank, the Paraa ferry links southern lodges to the northern Buligi game circuits. The UWA-operated vehicle ferry runs daily between roughly 07:00 and 19:00, with scheduled crossings commonly at 07:00, 09:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 19:00 — confirm times on arrival. Peak-season queues can add 30 to 60 minutes; missing the last crossing can strand you on the wrong bank overnight.

Foreign non-resident park entry under the current UWA tariff (July 2024–June 2026) is US$45 per adult per 24 hours. Plan dawn game drives on the northern bank around the first ferry of the morning.
