Tour overview

The 3 Days Murchison Falls National Park Safari Tour is a rewarding short Uganda wildlife adventure featuring game drives, a boat cruise on the River Nile and an exciting hike to the Top of Murchison Falls. The itinerary is suitable for travellers who want more wildlife-viewing time than is normally possible on a two-day safari while still keeping the trip short and convenient.

Starting from Kampala or Entebbe, the safari takes you northwest through Uganda’s rural countryside to Murchison Falls National Park, the country’s largest and one of its most popular wildlife destinations. The park is renowned for its open savannah, abundant wildlife, beautiful Nile scenery and the dramatic Murchison Falls, where the river is forced through a narrow rocky gorge before plunging into the turbulent waters below.

This itinerary includes up to three wildlife-viewing opportunities. You may enjoy an optional evening game drive after arriving on the first day, an extended morning game drive on the second day and another game drive before leaving the park on the third day. This arrangement increases your chances of encountering elephants, lions, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, Jackson’s hartebeests, waterbucks, oribis, warthogs and numerous bird species.

The afternoon boat cruise on Day 2 travels along the Victoria Nile towards the base of Murchison Falls. During the cruise, you may see hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks and many river-associated birds. The boat trip also provides impressive views of the falls from below.

On Day 1, you will hike to the Top of Murchison Falls, allowing you to experience the waterfall from a closer and more dramatic perspective. The walk follows a scenic trail towards the upper viewpoints, where you can feel the spray, hear the roar of the Nile and observe the enormous power of the water as it enters the gorge.

On the final day, travellers may optionally stop at Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch for guided rhino tracking before returning to Kampala or Entebbe. This optional activity provides an opportunity to observe southern white rhinos on foot under the guidance of an experienced ranger.

The safari can be arranged using budget, mid-range, luxury or high-end accommodation and is available as a private tour for couples, families, solo travellers, residents, photographers and small groups.

Your 3-day Uganda safari, day by day

Each day below shows where you go, what you experience, and where you can stay—luxury, mid-range, and budget lodge options included.

  1. 3 Days Murhison falls safari elephants

    Day 1

Kampala or Entebbe – Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park – Top of the Falls Hike – Optional Evening Game Drive

Your 3 Days Murchison Falls Safari begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel, residence or agreed meeting point in Kampala or Entebbe. You will meet your professional driver-guide, receive a brief introduction to the safari and begin the journey towards northwestern Uganda.

The drive takes you through Kampala’s outer suburbs before continuing across the beautiful Ugandan countryside. Along the way, you will pass through small towns, roadside markets, villages, agricultural areas and stretches of woodland.

Your guide will make suitable stops for refreshments, lunch and comfort breaks. The journey generally takes approximately five to seven hours depending on your pickup location, traffic conditions, meal stops and the location of your selected lodge.

Upon reaching Murchison Falls National Park, you will continue towards the starting point of the Top of Murchison Falls hike.

Hike to the Top of Murchison Falls

The Top of the Falls hike is one of the most memorable activities on this safari. Depending on the day’s programme and current park arrangements, the hike may begin from a designated trailhead near the falls or be combined with a transfer to one of the main viewpoints.

Accompanied by a guide, you will follow a scenic trail through vegetation and rocky terrain towards the upper section of the waterfall. As you approach the falls, the sound of rushing water becomes increasingly powerful and clouds of mist rise from the gorge.

At the Top of Murchison Falls, the River Nile is compressed through a narrow rocky channel before plunging into the gorge below. The force of the water creates white rapids, vibrations, spray and a continuous roar that can be experienced from several viewpoints.

The hike provides excellent opportunities for landscape photography and allows you to appreciate the waterfall from perspectives that cannot be seen during the boat cruise. Your guide will explain the formation of the falls, the flow of the Nile and the importance of the river to the surrounding ecosystem.

Visitors should wear secure walking shoes because sections of the trail may be rocky, steep, slippery or wet from the waterfall spray. A light rain jacket and drinking water are also recommended.

After completing the hike, continue to your selected safari lodge for check-in and relaxation.

    Optional Evening Game Drive

Depending on your arrival time, energy level and lodge location, you may choose to enjoy an optional evening game drive.

The late afternoon and early evening can be rewarding for wildlife viewing because temperatures become cooler and animals begin emerging from shaded resting areas. Elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, hartebeests and warthogs may be seen feeding across the savannah.

The evening drive may also provide opportunities to spot lions becoming active before nightfall. The setting sun creates beautiful golden light across the grasslands, making this an excellent time for wildlife and landscape photography.

After the optional game drive, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

    Day 2

Morning Game Drive – Afternoon Boat Cruise to the Base of Murchison Falls

Wake up early and enjoy breakfast before departing for an exciting morning game drive across the wildlife-rich savannah of Murchison Falls National Park.

The early morning hours are generally among the most productive periods for wildlife viewing. Temperatures are cooler, grazing animals are active and predators may still be moving through the park after their nocturnal activities.

    Morning Game Drive

Your driver-guide will take you through some of the park’s most rewarding wildlife tracks. The exact route will depend on your lodge location, recent animal movements, road conditions and information shared among safari guides.

The northern section of Murchison Falls National Park contains extensive open savannah, patches of acacia woodland, seasonal wetlands and riverine vegetation. These different habitats support a wide range of animals and birds.

During the game drive, look out for African elephants, Rothschild’s giraffes, African buffaloes, Uganda kobs, Jackson’s hartebeests, waterbucks, oribis, bushbucks and warthogs.

Lions are among the most sought-after animals in the park. They may be seen resting in the grass, moving between hunting areas or observing herds of Uganda kobs. Leopards and spotted hyenas also occur in the park, although sightings are less predictable.

The open landscapes make Murchison Falls one of Uganda’s most rewarding destinations for wildlife photography. Giraffes walking across the grasslands, elephants feeding near woodland and antelope herds gathered on the plains provide excellent photographic scenes.

Birdwatchers may encounter Abyssinian ground hornbills, secretary birds, grey crowned cranes, African fish eagles, saddle-billed storks, martial eagles, bee-eaters, rollers and several species of vultures.

The morning game drive normally lasts approximately three to four hours, although the duration may vary according to wildlife sightings and the location of your lodge.

After the game drive, return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest before preparing for the afternoon boat cruise.

Afternoon Boat Cruise on the Victoria Nile

After lunch, transfer to the jetty for the scheduled boat cruise along the Victoria Nile towards the base of Murchison Falls.

The boat cruise is one of the signature activities in Murchison Falls National Park. It offers a relaxing but highly rewarding way to observe wildlife along the river and experience the waterfall from below.

As the boat travels upstream, look out for large pods of hippos resting in the water. Nile crocodiles may be seen basking on exposed sandbanks or lying quietly along the shoreline.

The banks of the Nile attract numerous animals, particularly during hot periods. Elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks, Uganda kobs and other wildlife may approach the river to drink or cool down.

The cruise is also excellent for birdwatching. Frequently encountered species include African fish eagles, pied kingfishers, giant kingfishers, Goliath herons, saddle-billed storks, African jacanas, cormorants, egrets and red-throated bee-eaters.

As the boat approaches the base of the falls, the river narrows and the surrounding landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. From a safe viewing distance, you will see the Nile emerging from the gorge amid white water, mist and tremendous force.

The boat will normally pause at a suitable viewpoint, allowing you to photograph the falls and enjoy the scenery before returning downstream to the jetty.

After the cruise, meet your driver-guide and return to the lodge. Spend the evening relaxing, enjoying the sunset or listening to the sounds of the surrounding wilderness.

Dinner and overnight at your selected lodge.

  3. 3 Days Murhison falls safari elephants

    Day 3

Morning Game Drive – Optional Ziwa Rhino Tracking – Return to Kampala or Entebbe

After an early breakfast, check out of the lodge and begin the final wildlife experience of your 3 Days Murchison Falls National Park Safari Tour.

    Final Morning Game Drive

Instead of leaving the park immediately, you will enjoy another game drive as you travel through the savannah towards the exit gate.

This final drive provides an additional opportunity to search for species you may not have encountered on the previous day. Wildlife moves naturally across the park, meaning that every drive offers different sightings and photographic opportunities.

Your guide may explore quieter tracks, woodland sections, open plains or areas close to water sources depending on recent wildlife reports.

You may see elephants moving between feeding areas, giraffes browsing on acacia trees, buffaloes gathered in herds, Uganda kobs grazing across the plains and warthogs feeding beside the road.

The morning is also another opportunity to search for lions, leopards and hyenas. Predator sightings cannot be guaranteed, but spending additional time inside the park improves your overall chances.

Birdwatchers can continue looking for savannah raptors, ground hornbills, storks, bee-eaters, rollers and other species before leaving the national park.

After the game drive, exit Murchison Falls National Park and begin the journey back towards Kampala or Entebbe.

Optional Rhino Tracking at Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch

Travellers interested in seeing rhinos may add an optional stop at Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch.

Upon arrival, you will register and meet an experienced ranger for a safety briefing. The ranger will then lead you through the rhinos’ habitat on foot.

The distance walked depends on the current location of the rhinos. They may be found resting under trees, grazing in open grassland or moving through woodland.

Once the rhinos are located, you will observe them from a safe distance while the ranger explains their behaviour, feeding habits, breeding and conservation history.

Rhino tracking is a distinctive experience because it is conducted on foot rather than from a safari vehicle. It provides a close but controlled encounter with one of Africa’s most impressive large mammals.

The activity is optional and available at an additional cost. Adding it will extend the day and result in a later arrival in Kampala or Entebbe.

After rhino tracking, enjoy lunch at the ranch or at a suitable restaurant along the route before continuing south.

Travellers who do not select the rhino tracking activity will proceed directly towards Kampala or Entebbe, with a lunch and refreshment stop along the way.

You will arrive in Kampala or Entebbe during the late afternoon or evening depending on traffic, road conditions, the selected activities and your final drop-off location.

Your guide will transfer you to your hotel, residence or Entebbe International Airport, marking the end of your 3 Days Murchison Falls Safari.
