Travel Times Between Uganda National Parks
Uganda packs ten national parks into a country roughly the size of the United Kingdom, but the roads between them do not follow straight lines. A gorilla trek in Bwindi and a Nile launch cruise at Murchison Falls can sit fewer than 500 kilometres apart on the map — yet joining both in one week means knowing which transfers are half-day hops and which are full-day commitments. Get the hours wrong and you arrive after dark at a closed gate, or burn a wildlife morning on tarmac you could have slept through.
This guide lists realistic driving distances and times between Uganda’s major parks — from Entebbe and Kampala baselines through the western wildlife arc and the northern Karamoja circuit. Figures assume a pop-up-roof 4×4 with a driver-guide, normal photo stops and a lunch break on longer legs. Use it alongside our best Uganda safari itineraries when you fix dates.
Distances from Entebbe and Kampala
Most safaris start at Entebbe International Airport, roughly 40 kilometres and one to one-and-a-half hours from Kampala. Approximate gate-to-gate figures from the capital:
Lake Mburo — 228 to 255 km, three and a half to five hours to Nshara or Sanga Gate. Murchison Falls via Kichumbanyobo Gate — 305 to 350 km, five to seven hours (add an hour from Entebbe). Kibale Forest — 290 to 350 km, five to six hours. Queen Elizabeth via Mbarara — 370 to 460 km, six to seven hours to Katunguru Gate. Bwindi — 460 to 510 km, eight to ten hours to Buhoma, Rushaga or Nkuringo.
Kidepo Valley at Apoka — 560 to 700 km, ten to twelve hours, usually with an overnight in Gulu or Kitgum. Semuliki, Rwenzori and Mgahinga — 330 to 480 km, five and a half to nine hours. Mount Elgon near Mbale — 226 km, about five hours. Many northern itineraries pause at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, 176 kilometres north of Kampala.
Western circuit: park to park
The classic south-western loop — Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi and Lake Mburo — contains Uganda’s shortest inter-park legs. Kibale to Queen Elizabeth via Fort Portal and Kasese covers 110 to 150 kilometres in two to three hours. Many travellers track chimpanzees at Kanyanchu in the morning and reach Mweya by afternoon.
Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi is about 160 to 170 kilometres on paper, but Ishasha–Kihihi murram stretches the run to three to four hours, longer after rain. Buhoma pairs naturally with Queen Elizabeth’s northern gates; Rushaga and Nkuringo suit itineraries including Ishasha’s tree-climbing lions. Queen Elizabeth to Lake Mburo via Mbarara runs 186 to 210 kilometres in two and a half to four hours. Bwindi to Lake Mburo covers roughly 250 kilometres and five to six hours — why most operators place Mburo after gorilla trekking.
Linking the western arc to Murchison adds a full transfer day. Murchison to Kibale via Hoima and Fort Portal spans 290 to 350 kilometres in six to seven hours. Queen Elizabeth to Murchison through Kyenjojo–Hoima–Masindi runs 336 to 486 kilometres in seven to nine hours; leaving from Ishasha rather than Mweya adds two to three hours. Northern circuit: Murchison and Kidepo
From Paraa or Murchison’s northern gates at Tangi and Wankwar, the road to Kitgum covers roughly 320 kilometres in seven hours through Gulu. The final 120-kilometre murram run from Kitgum to Apoka adds two to three hours — plan nine to ten hours total, or overnight in Kitgum if you left Paraa late. Kidepo to Kampala via Gulu covers 570 to 700 kilometres in eleven to twelve hours, best spread over two days unless you fly. The combined northern circuit safari through Murchison and Kidepo typically totals 1,400 kilometres over seven to ten days.
What changes the hours on the road
Quoted times assume dry-season conditions from June to September and December to February. April–May and October–November rains slow murram at Ishasha, Budongo and the Kidepo approach. Kampala morning traffic adds 45 to 90 minutes to southern routes; experienced drivers leave Entebbe by 06:30. UWA park gates operate 07:00–19:00 — late arrivals are turned away. Refuel in Hoima, Gulu or Mbarara whenever the tank drops below half. Treat any leg quoted at five hours or more as a dedicated travel day; transfers under three hours can pair with an afternoon activity at the destination if permits align.
Flying between parks
When road hours threaten tight gorilla permits or flights, Aerolink Uganda connects Entebbe with Pakuba, Mweya, Kihihi, Kisoro and Apoka — each leg 60 to 90 minutes versus five or more hours on tarmac. - Can I reach Kidepo Valley in one day from Kampala?

Technically yes in the dry season with a pre-dawn departure, but an overnight in Gulu or Kitgum produces a far better first game drive at Apoka. Charter flights from Entebbe take about one hour.
