Northern Uganda Safari Circuit
Uganda’s Northern Safari Circuit strings together three reserves that together deliver what no single park in the country can: the Big Five on foot and on game drives, a thundering Nile gorge, and semi-arid wilderness at the South Sudan border where cheetah still hunt open grassland. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Murchison Falls National Park and Kidepo Valley National Park sit on a natural northbound corridor from Kampala — rhinos on the Gulu highway, giraffes and hippos on the Victoria Nile, then ostrich and lion kopjes in Karamoja.

Why the northern circuit works as one trip
Each stop answers a different safari question. Ziwa is Uganda’s only place to track reintroduced southern white rhino on foot — the sanctuary at Nakitoma in Nakasongola District holds more than 30 animals across roughly 70 square kilometres, sitting 176 kilometres north of Kampala on the Kampala–Gulu highway, about three hours by road. Wild rhino were extirpated from Uganda’s national parks by the early 1980s; Ziwa is the breeding programme that will eventually restock Murchison. A guided walk here completes the Big Five before you even reach the park gates.
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest protected area at roughly 3,840 square kilometres, bisected by the Victoria Nile. Rothschild’s giraffe browse Borassus palms on the northern Buligi Peninsula in numbers found almost nowhere else on Earth — Giraffe Conservation Foundation surveys recorded roughly 1,770 individuals in recent rounds. The UWA launch cruise from Paraa runs 17 kilometres upstream to the base of the falls, past hippo pods and Nile crocodiles; boats depart at 09:00 and 14:00.
Kidepo Valley National Park covers 1,442 square kilometres in north-eastern Karamoja, about 571 kilometres from Kampala via Gulu and Kitgum, and five kilometres from the Kenya border. UWA records 86 mammal species and 476 bird species. Cheetah, bat-eared fox, striped hyena and caracal occur here reliably; wild ostrich stride the Kidepo sand river — Uganda’s only wild population. The permanent pools of the Narus Valley draw buffalo herds into the thousands during dry months, and elephant numbers have recovered from roughly 200 in the 1990s to an estimated 650–1,000 today.
Together, the three reserves form Uganda’s strongest pure-savannah circuit — no gorilla permits, no forest trekking, just open-country game viewing from the Albertine Rift escarpment to the Karamoja plains.
Routing and drive times
Most road itineraries run clockwise from Entebbe or Kampala: Ziwa → Murchison → Kidepo → return. From Kampala to Ziwa is about three hours; Ziwa to Murchison’s Kichumbanyobo Gate near Masindi adds roughly 90 minutes. The full Kampala-to-Murchison leg via Ziwa totals about 305 kilometres and five to six hours if you allow two hours for rhino tracking and lunch.
The long leg is Murchison to Kidepo. From the park’s northern gates — Tangi, Wankwar or Chobe near Pakwach — to Apoka at Kidepo is roughly 400 to 450 kilometres and seven to nine hours via Gulu and Kitgum. Enter Kidepo through Lokumoit Gate on the direct Gulu–Kitgum route, or Nataba Gate if you approach through the Karamoja subregion. North-bank lodges at Murchison are reached via the Paraa Bridge, which has carried vehicle traffic since February 2021. Alternatively, fly one leg: Aerolink Uganda operates scheduled services from Entebbe to Murchison’s Pakuba airstrip and to Apoka Airstrip at Kidepo on separate days. Suggested itinerary: eight to ten days
A well-paced northern circuit needs at least eight days. Shorter six-day trips either skip Kidepo’s second game-drive morning or compress Ziwa into a rushed hour.
Day 1 — Ziwa and Murchison: Depart Kampala by 06:30, reach Ziwa for a mid-morning rhino walk (trekking is included in sanctuary entry — currently US$60 for foreign non-residents under the July 2025 tariff). Continue to Murchison and check in near Paraa.
Days 2–3 — Murchison: Morning game drive on the Buligi Peninsula for giraffe, lion, buffalo and Uganda kob. Afternoon Nile launch cruise. On day three, visit the Top of the Falls viewpoint or hike with a UWA ranger (US$15), or add a delta shoebill cruise if birding is a priority.
Day 4 — Transfer to Kidepo: Drive north via Gulu, lunch in the city, continue to Kitgum and enter through Lokumoit Gate. Overnight at Apoka or a lodge in the Narus Valley.
Days 5–6 — Kidepo: Morning and afternoon game drives in the Narus Valley — lion on granite kopjes, zebra, eland and cheetah on open grassland. Excursion to the Kidepo sand river for ostrich and secretary birds. Optional night drive (US$30 per person under the current UWA tariff) or a Karamojong manyatta visit outside the park.
Days 7–8 — Return: Drive back toward Kampala, optionally overnighting at Murchison for a second game-drive morning, or break in Gulu. A tenth day allows Ziwa shoebill trekking at dawn — a separate activity from rhino tracking — without sacrificing park time.
Wildlife highlights at each stop
At Ziwa, southern white rhino are the headline — rangers lead you to within metres on foot. The sanctuary also holds bushbuck, oribi, bushpig and rich birdlife including shoebill in nearby wetlands if you book an early-morning canoe trek.
At Murchison, expect elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, hippo, Nile crocodile and Jackson’s hartebeest on the northern plains. Shoebill stork haunt the Albert Delta papyrus. The park holds four of the Big Five inside the gates; Ziwa supplies the fifth.
At Kidepo, the Narus Valley concentrates predators and prey around permanent water. Cheetah hunt by day on open savannah — a sight rare elsewhere in Uganda. Greater kudu, lesser kudu, roan antelope and plains zebra add dry-country diversity, and the bird list includes Kori bustard, Abyssinian roller and over 56 raptor species. Outside the park, visits to Karamojong manyattas add insight into pastoral life on the semi-arid plains.
Park fees and activity costs
Under the UWA conservation tariff valid July 2024–June 2026, foreign non-resident adults pay US$45 per 24 hours at Murchison (children US$25; under-fives free) and US$40 at Kidepo (children US$20). Murchison day game drives cost US$25 per guide, the launch trip US$30, and Kidepo day game drives US$20 per guide. Ziwa entry at US$60 includes rhino tracking and is managed separately from UWA park fees; the ranch operates cashless — card payment only.

Best time to travel
The dry seasons from June to September and December to February concentrate wildlife at the Nile banks and Narus waterholes and keep murram roads firmer on the Kitgum–Kidepo stretch. April–May and October–November bring green scenery, excellent birding and fewer vehicles at all three stops; allow extra time on the Kidepo road after heavy rain. Ziwa rhino tracking runs year-round, though midday heat makes early-morning walks more comfortable.
Accommodation and pacing
At Murchison, base near Paraa on either bank — two full nights is the practical minimum for a game drive and launch cruise. At Kidepo, lodges cluster around Apoka; two nights allows a Narus drive, a sand-river excursion and either a night drive or cultural visit. Ziwa’s Amuka Lodge suits an overnight if you want shoebill trekking at dawn before continuing north. Rushing the circuit into six days turns Kidepo into a transit stop; eight to ten days is the pace that justifies the drive to Karamoja.

Most operators run Ziwa and Murchison first, then Kidepo — the Gulu corridor from Murchison’s northern gates is the standard link. Starting at Kidepo via charter flight and finishing at Murchison works if you prefer to end on the Nile cruise rather than a long drive home.
- Is the Murchison–Kidepo transfer too long?

It is a full day — seven to nine hours — but breaking overnight in Gulu makes it manageable. An alternative is flying Entebbe–Apoka, driving Murchison to Kampala via Ziwa, and skipping the inter-park road entirely.
