Entebbe to Murchison Falls National Park
Most international visitors to Murchison Falls National Park land at Entebbe International Airport on the shores of Lake Victoria. From the arrivals hall, the park looks close on a map — yet the transfer north-west crosses Kampala, the Kafu River bridge and Budongo Forest before you reach the Victoria Nile at Paraa. Getting the route and timing right saves you from a rushed first day or a missed ferry crossing.

Distances and realistic drive times
Entebbe to Paraa via Masindi and Kichumbanyobo Gate covers roughly 320 to 360 kilometres. Allow six to seven hours with fuel and lunch stops — longer if you pause at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
From Kampala alone, the distance to Paraa is about 305 kilometres, typically four to five hours before stops. Entebbe adds the airport run — roughly 46 km to the capital — so plan an extra 45 to 90 minutes. The journey breaks into clear legs: Entebbe to Kampala (45–90 minutes), Kampala to Masindi on the Gulu Highway (about 200 km, two to two-and-a-half hours), then Masindi to Paraa through Kichumbanyobo (about 85 km, 1.5 to 2.5 hours). If your lodge sits on the northern bank, budget another 30 to 45 minutes for the Paraa ferry.
Entebbe to Kampala: the first leg
The Kampala–Entebbe Expressway is a 51 km toll road linking the airport with the capital. Light vehicles pay around UGX 5,000 at the Busega, Kajjansi or Mpala plazas — cash or Upesi card. The expressway typically saves 30 to 45 minutes compared with the older lakeside road through Kajjansi.
Traffic where the expressway merges into Kampala’s northern bypass can still slow you between 08:00 and 10:00, so an early pick-up matters. Uganda drives on the left. A realistic same-day schedule: meet your driver at 08:00, clear Kampala by 09:30, lunch in Masindi around midday, enter Kichumbanyobo by 14:00–15:00 and cross the ferry before 16:00.
The standard route: Masindi and Kichumbanyobo Gate
For most Entebbe arrivals heading to Paraa or the Top of the Falls, the route through Masindi remains the default. Refuel in Masindi — the last dependable petrol station before the park — then drive about 16 km east to Kichumbanyobo Gate.
From the gate, the road passes Kaniyo Pabidi in Budongo Forest, where baboons and hornbills often slow traffic. Under the National Oil Roads Programme, much of the Masindi–Paraa corridor has been resealed with bitumen. Game tracks beyond Paraa remain gravel and still favour a high-clearance 4×4, especially in the rains (March–May and September–November).
Northern gates: Karuma, Chobe and Tangi
If your lodge sits in the northern sector — Pakuba, Chobe Safari Lodge or itineraries linking with Gulu and Kidepo Valley — enter via the Kampala–Pakwach highway through Karuma Falls. From Entebbe this corridor takes roughly four to five hours plus breaks.
Chobe Gate lies two to three kilometres north of Karuma Bridge. Tangi Gate near Pakwach and Wankwar Gate south of Purongo serve West Nile and Gulu routes. Stops worth making en route

There is no reliable fuel inside the park — fill up completely in Masindi on the southern approach, or at Karuma, Pakwach or Gulu if you enter from the north.
Flying from Entebbe: the one-hour option
A domestic flight replaces six hours on the road with about 60 minutes in the air. Aerolink Uganda operates scheduled services from Entebbe to Pakuba, Chobe and Bugungu airstrips, with indicative one-way fares around US$262–284 for foreign non-residents. Scheduled flights do not run in March, April, May or November; charter remains available year-round.

The Paraa ferry and park entry
The Victoria Nile divides Murchison at Paraa. The UWA vehicle ferry runs daily between roughly 07:00 and 19:00, with crossings commonly at 07:00, 09:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 19:00. Confirm times on arrival; missing the last crossing can strand you on the wrong bank.
