For travellers on a tight itinerary — a three-day break, a honeymoon, families with young children, or anyone stacking Murchison with gorilla trekking in Bwindi — that is a full morning gone before you have seen a single elephant.
Flying suits guests who want to maximise time on the Nile rather than on tarmac, and it works well when connecting parks in a single day. The Three Airstrips: Pakuba, Bugungu and Chobe
Murchison is served by three grass and murram airstrips, each positioned for a different part of the park. The Nile divides the park into north and south banks, so choosing the right strip saves ferry crossings and transfer time.
Pakuba Airstrip sits on the northern bank near Paraa, the park’s operational hub. Managed by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority, it is the busiest strip and the natural choice for lodges around Paraa, the Buligi game-drive circuit, Nile boat cruises and delta shoebill excursions. From the apron, Paraa is roughly a 20-to-30-minute 4×4 transfer.
Bugungu Airstrip lies on the southern bank close to Bugungu Gate. Chobe Airstrip serves the eastern sector near Chobe Safari Lodge and the Chobe Gate area. Transfers from Chobe to Paraa for central activities can take up to two hours, so match your landing strip to your accommodation.
Operators, Departure Points and Timings
Scheduled domestic flights depart from Entebbe International Airport, roughly 46 kilometres from Kampala, and in some cases from Kajjansi Airfield south of the capital.
Aerolink Uganda operates the main scheduled network. For 2026, flight A8 121 departs Entebbe at 13:00 and arrives at Pakuba, Chobe or Bugungu around 14:00. Return flight A8 122 departs the park at 14:20 and reaches Entebbe by approximately 17:15. The service runs daily except March, April, May and November, when scheduled flights are suspended and charter is the only air option. Flights require a minimum of four passengers per airstrip.
Bar Aviation Uganda also operates scheduled and charter services to Murchison’s airstrips from Entebbe and Kajjansi. Independent charter operators can tailor departure times for groups who need early-morning arrivals or guaranteed departure regardless of passenger load. Lodge Pick-Ups and Ground Transfers
None of the Murchison airstrips are within walking distance of lodges or park gates. Every fly-in guest needs a pre-arranged vehicle transfer — typically a lodge safari vehicle or your tour operator’s 4×4 waiting on the apron with a name board.
Most lodges include airstrip meet-and-greet as part of a fly-in package. From Pakuba, expect 20 to 30 minutes to Paraa-area lodges. From Bugungu, south-bank camps are 20 to 25 minutes away. If your first activity is on the northern bank but you land at Bugungu, you will cross the Nile at the Paraa ferry — your lodge should schedule crossings around activity times. Baggage on light aircraft is typically limited to around 15 kilograms per person in soft-sided bags.
The View From Above
Beyond saving time, the flight itself is part of the experience. Light aircraft fly low enough to reveal what no road journey can: the Nile threading through papyrus swamps, the Albertine Rift escarpment dropping towards Lake Albert, and — on clear days — the spray plume above Murchison Falls where the river forces through a seven-metre gap.
The dry seasons — roughly June to August and December to February — tend to offer the clearest skies and the most reliable scheduled services.
