Long-term averages show daytime highs around 30–33°C, nights near 19–21°C, and roughly 40–60 mm of rain across about nine days — brief showers rather than the sustained storms of April or November. Humidity sits lower than in the wet months, skies are largely clear and murram tracks on Buligi, Pakuba and the Queen’s Track firm after the short rains.
The landscape still carries green from November early in the month — Borassus palm savannah photographs well before grasses bleach pale in January. Park gates open at 07:00 and close at 19:00; plan drives for dawn and late afternoon. Pack lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, a light rain jacket and plenty of water.
Wildlife in December: gathering at the Nile
As temporary pools shrink, elephants, buffalo, Uganda kob, hartebeest and more than 1,700 Nubian (Rothschild’s) giraffe — recorded in recent Giraffe Conservation Foundation surveys — concentrate along the Victoria and Albert Nile. Guides who know the northern savannah still produce lion on Buligi’s open ridges, leopard in riverine thickets and spotted hyena at first light. The falls and the Nile boat cruise
December discharge at the gorge averages around 300 cubic metres per second — enough to shake the viewing platform without the wet-season peaks that can exceed 1,000 cubic metres per second. The Nile is forced through a cleft roughly six metres wide and plunges about 45 metres into the Devil’s Cauldron.
The launch cruise from Paraa covers about 17 kilometres each way to the Fajao Gorge, passing hippos, crocodiles, elephants and red-throated bee-eaters at Nyamusika. Schedule northern-bank drives to leave as early as the Paraa bridge or ferry allows so you are on the Buligi circuit before heat haze builds. Kaniyo Pabidi in Budongo Forest, via Kichumbanyobo Gate, offers chimp tracking under mahogany canopy.
