Distances and realistic drive times from Lake Mburo

There is no direct highway linking Lake Mburo and Murchison Falls. Almost every transfer routes through the Kampala corridor — back-tracking north-east from the park to the capital, then continuing north-west to Masindi. Measured gate-to-gate from Nshara Gate to Paraa on the Victoria Nile, the total covers roughly 530 to 545 kilometres and takes eight to ten hours with sensible stops.

The journey splits into two legs. Lake Mburo to Kampala is about 228 to 240 kilometres on the Masaka–Mbarara highway — typically three and a half to five hours. Kampala to Paraa adds another 305 kilometres and five to six hours via Masindi and Kichumbanyobo Gate. North-bank lodges after the Paraa ferry need an extra 30 to 45 minutes.

The standard route: Masaka, Kampala and Masindi

After leaving Lake Mburo through Nshara or Sanga Gate, most transfers head north-east on tarmac through Lyantonde and Masaka toward Kampala. Refuel in Masaka or Kampala — petrol beyond Masindi is unreliable. From Kampala, follow the Kampala–Gulu Highway (A104) through Luweero and Nakasongola to Masindi, then drive 16 kilometres east to Kichumbanyobo Gate.

The road through Kaniyo Pabidi in Budongo Forest passes olive baboons and hornbills. Kichumbanyobo suits arrivals heading to Paraa, the Top of the Falls or south-bank lodges. UWA gates open at 07:00 and close at 19:00. The western alternative: Mbarara, Hoima and Bugungu Gate

Travellers on a western Uganda loop can swing west from Lake Mburo through Mbarara, then north via Kyenjojo toward Hoima and Bugungu Gate. From Hoima, the road runs through Biiso and Buliisa before the escarpment drops toward Lake Albert — dramatic park arrival with Congo’s Blue Mountains visible on a clear day. Most visitors stay for more than a quick drive. Game drives cover zebra, impala, buffalo and reintroduced Nubian giraffe; UWA boat cruises from Rwonyo cost US$30 per person for foreign non-residents. Horseback safaris at Mihingo Lodge — the only such rides in Uganda — or a long morning boat cruise rule out reaching Murchison the same day. Which order: Lake Mburo first or Murchison first?

Both directions work. The Equator crossing at Kayabwe, roughly 80 kilometres south-west of Kampala on the Masaka road, breaks the Lake Mburo leg neatly. Practical tips for the road

A high-clearance 4×4 is strongly recommended, especially March to May and September to November when murram tracks beyond Paraa turn slick. Lake Mburo’s gate roads from Lyantonde and Sanga are murram — manageable dry, slippery after rain.
