What Makes a Safari “Editor’s Choice”
Editor’s choice is a filter, not a marketing label. A curated itinerary secures gorilla permits (US$800 for foreign non-residents through June 2026) and chimpanzee permits (US$250 at Kibale) before lodges are booked, because both sell out in the June–September and December–February peaks. It allows at least two nights per major park, avoids back-to-back eight-hour drives where a short flight saves a full day, and pairs complementary experiences rather than repeating the same activity twice.

Murchison Falls National Park — The Nile Anchor
At 3,840 km², Murchison is Uganda’s largest park. The Victoria Nile forces through a seven-metre gorge and drops 43 metres into the Devil’s Cauldron — best appreciated from both the Top of the Falls walk and a launch cruise past dense hippo pods and basking crocodiles.
The northern Buligi Peninsula holds prime game viewing: elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and Uganda’s flagship population of Nubian giraffe, with recent surveys estimating roughly 2,250 individuals — the species’ global stronghold. Most southern approaches enter via Kichumbanyobo Gate, 16 km from Masindi on a 305 km run from Kampala; the Paraa ferry links southern lodges to northern game-drive circuits. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — Gorilla Trekking
No editor’s choice Uganda safari is complete without an hour among mountain gorillas. Bwindi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protects ancient montane forest where the 2018 census recorded 459 gorillas — roughly half the world’s remaining population. Only eight trekkers visit each habituated family per day, which is why permits must be reserved months ahead for peak season.
Trekking starts at one of four sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga or Nkuringo — then a guided hike until your group meets the assigned family. UWA sets permits at US$800, with discounted US$600 rates in April, May and November. Queen Elizabeth National Park — Savannah Diversity
Covering 1,978 km² between Lakes Edward and George, Queen Elizabeth is Uganda’s most ecologically varied savannah park — 95 mammal species and more than 600 recorded birds. The Kazinga Channel, a 32 km waterway linking the two lakes, supports one of Africa’s densest hippo concentrations and delivers effortless photography from a two-hour launch cruise.
Morning game drives on the Kasenyi plains target lion, leopard, elephant and Uganda kob, while the southern Ishasha sector is famous for fig-tree lions — one of only two East African populations that habitually climb. Kibale Forest National Park — Chimpanzee Capital
Kibale covers 795 km² of tropical rainforest west of Fort Portal and holds the highest primate diversity in East Africa — 13 species including chimpanzee, red colobus and L’Hoest’s monkey. Standard tracking departs from Kanyanchu Visitor Centre at 08:00 and 14:00, with up to 36 permits per session and a one-hour viewing rule once the habituated community is found.

The Editor’s Choice Circuit — Timing and Seasons
The route we recommend most often runs ten days: Entebbe, Ziwa rhino tracking, two nights at Murchison, two at Kibale, two at Queen Elizabeth (including Ishasha if heading to Bwindi), two at Bwindi for the gorilla trek, and a final night at Lake Mburo to break the return to Entebbe. A tighter seven-day version drops Murchison and focuses on Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi.
The dry windows of June through September and December through February offer firmer forest trails and wildlife concentrated at rivers.
