Routes, Gates and the Nile Crossing

Most visitors drive from Kampala or Entebbe — about 305 kilometres and typically five to six hours to Paraa. The standard southern approach enters at Kichumbanyobo Gate, roughly 16 kilometres north of Masindi, then runs 85 to 87 kilometres through Budongo Forest to the Nile. Northern gates at Tangi, Wankwar and Chobe suit routes from Gulu or Kidepo and drop you straight onto the game zone if your lodge sits on the north bank.

At Paraa, the vehicle ferry links both banks on a published schedule — typically 07:00, 09:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 19:00 daily, with no separate crossing fee beyond park entry. Southern-bank lodges with northern game drives need that 07:00 sailing. Light aircraft from Entebbe reach Pakuba (about 19 kilometres from Paraa), Bugungu or Chobe in roughly one hour. Under the UWA Conservation Tariff valid through 30 June 2026, Murchison sits in Category A+. Foreign non-resident adults pay US$45 per 24 hours; children aged 5–15 pay US$25; under-fives enter free. Lodge location shapes your days more than room rate. The northern bank puts you minutes from Buligi savannah — ideal for dawn drives without a river crossing. The southern bank offers finer river frontage and quick access to Budongo chimps, but north-bank game drives require the Paraa ferry.
